Types of Fertility Tests

There are certain tests that can be done either to detect infertility reasons or to make sure that the child is going to be in full health. These tests might be performed on the man or woman. The main types of fertility tests for men include:

• Semen analysis: A lab tests that involves examining the health and viability of a man’s sperm
• Hormone testing: Determining your level of testosterone and other male hormones
• Genetic testing:A test to detect any genetic defect that might cause infertility
• Testicular biopsy: A testicular biopsy can help identify abnormalities that cause infertility or retrieve sperm for assisted reproductive techniques, such as IVF

• Other specialty testing: If needed, a test to evaluate a semen specimen for DNA abnormalities

The tests for women include:

• Ovulation testing:A blood test measures hormone levels to determine whether you’re ovulating
• Hysterosalpingography:Hysterosalpingography evaluates your uterus and fallopian tubes to find blockages or other infertility problems
• Ovarian reserve testing:A test to determine the quantity of the eggs available for ovulation
• Other hormone testing: Tests to determine the level of ovulatory hormones, as well as pituitary hormones that control reproductive processes
• Imaging tests: Pelvic ultrasound looks for uterine or ovarian disease. A sonohysterogram, also called a saline infusion sonogram, also helps see the details inside the uterus to enable better detection of issues
• Laparoscopy: Surgical insertion of a laparoscope into your abdomen through a small incision to look for endometriosis, scarring, and other conditions
• Endometrial biopsy: An endometrial biopsy uses a cathether to take a sample of tissue from the endometrium (he lining of the body of the uterus) to analyze it in the lab.

Types of Fertility Treatments

Thanks to technology, people with all kinds of fertility issues can have their own baby these days. There are many types of fertility treatments available, ranging from simple interventions to more complicated procedures known as assisted reproductive treatment (ART). ART refers to medical and scientific procedures that make it easier for sperm to fertilize an egg, and help the egg implant in the uterine lining. Depending on the cause of infertility, the following types of treatment may be recommended by the fertility specialist:

• Reproductive surgery: Surgery to treat abnormalities in the reproductive system such as a congenital malformation
• In-vitro fertilization (IVF): A woman’s egg is collected and then combined with a sperm in a laboratory dish
• Ovulation induction (OI): using fertility medications to stimulate egg release from the ovary
• Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI): Direct injection of sperm into the egg
• Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection (IMSI): This is a variation of ICSI that uses a higher-powered microscope to select highest quality sperms and thus to increase the chances of fertility
• Egg and sperm donation
• Assisted hatching: Making a small crack in the zona pellucida to increase pregnancy rates
• Gestational carrier (Gestational Surrogacy): A woman carries and delivers a child for another couple
• Egg freezing: Collecting a woman’s eggs and freezing them to save the woman’s ability to get pregnant in the future.
• Genetic testing: Removing one or more cells from an embryo to identify potential genetic defects. These testing involve two main types: Pre-implantation Genetic Screening (PGS) and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD).
• Microdissection TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction): Removing a small testicular tissue to extract sperm in men
• Intrauterine insemination (IUI): It involves placing sperm directly into the uterus by using a small catheter
• Hysteroscopic surgery: This surgery can help treat Uterine problems such as endometrial polyps, a uterine septum, intrauterine scar tissue and some fibroids

Moreover, there are also some non-surgical treatments that include no cutting in the body. These include:

• Fertility medications such as Clomiphene citrate (Clomid®)
• Hormone therapy
• Changing lifestyle factors: Improving your lifestyle by exercising regularly and having a healthy diet can also improve the chances of fertility
