Biography
Dr. Khalaj was born on July 10, 1967 in Karaj, Iran. After receiving his high school diploma he found himself interested in pursuing general medicine. Having finished his degree as a general practitioner in 1992, he decided to pursue his study by a specialty in surgery. Therefore, he studied general surgery in Imam Hossein Hospital under the mentorship of Professor Davahi until 1996. Afterwards, he received a fellowship in obesity, metabolic, and laparoscopic surgery in 1997. Dr. Khalaj started his work as an obesity surgeon in Hamedan. He was also appointed as the directorship of Imam Khomeini Hospital in Hamadan. Dr. Khalaj has also been constantly a main member and president of IFSU association in Iran for 3 terms.
By the beginning of obesity surgery in Iran, Dr. Khalaj had been to the United States to observe how obesity surgery clinics work there. He met Dr. Higa in Fresno, California, and observed the way the clinics covered all specialties needed by the patients such as a pre-operative exercise, nutritional and mental examination; as well as follow-up. Inspired by the idea, Dr. Khalaj founded the center of Hakim where patients can enjoy the same services plus being provided with an extensive follow-up service. Dr. Khalaj puts science as the overriding priority to serve patients who come from various parts of the world including neighboring countries, Europe, and Canada (including Iranians living abroad). In his opinion, following a scientific process during the surgery and follow-up period is of utmost importance.

More Information About Dr Khalaj
Dr. Khalaj started his education at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Science where he received his general practitioner degree. He then pursued his education to receive a specialization in the field of general surgery. He started to study this major under the mentorship of Dr. Davahi. After his graduation and receiving a board certification with high rank he was accepted to work at the Hamedan University as an assistant professor from 1996 for 5 years. There could also benefit from Dr. Kalbasi, namely the father of laparoscopy in Iran. On the brink of Laparoscopy surgery in Iran, Dr. Kalbasi came to Hamedan and ran a workshop for 2 days in Hamedan University. During the workshop he performed around 20 successful laparoscopic gallbladder surgeries. Participating in this workshop was a great help to get a deeper understanding of laparoscopy. He finally received his fellowship of Obesity, metabolic, and laparoscopic surgery at Iran University of Medical Science in 1997. For advanced laparoscopic surgery, he has also taken various courses in places such as France, United States, and India, and other parts of the world. These courses were mostly short-term, lasting about two weeks up to one month.
Dr. Khalaj has studied all types of laparoscopic surgeries. During his academic career, Dr. Khalaj has also consulted, supervised, and also published many scientific papers in subjects around laparoscopy and ultrasonography. In addition to his academic resume, Dr. Khalaj has authored two books one of which is titled “principle of bariatric surgery”.

With over 25 years of experience in obesity and laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Khalaj has performed a great number of successful surgeries. He started general surgery in Imam Hossein Hospital under the mentorship of Dr. Davahi in 1992. During his fellowship of laparoscopy in Hamedan, Dr. Khalaj has successfully performed over 1000 laparoscopic surgeries. He has also performed advanced surgeries such as adrenal in Hamedan. Dr. Khalaj has also worked as an assistant professor in Hamedan University for 5 years. From 2001, he came to Tehran where he started to work at Shahed University as a faculty member. At the same time, by the beginning of his work as a bariatric surgeon, Dr. Khalaj had a trip to the United States in different places. There, he met Dr. Higa in Fresno and learned from him about how obesity surgery is performed in the United States. As Dr. Khalaj came back to Iran, obesity surgery was just beginning to be performed in Iran, mostly in the form of an open surgery. However, due to his specialty in the field, Dr. Khalaj took the first step to perform obesity surgery with laparoscopy.
Having observed the medical center in the United States, Dr. Khalaj founded the center of Hakim. Hakim is a specialized center for obesity, metabolic, and laparoscopic surgeries. In this center, Dr. Khalaj has provided treatment to over 6000 patients. Moreover, all the information of the patients has been saved since 2013 to help them with further treatment. The theoretical knowledge to the practical experience has greatly contributed to the high success rate of surgeries under the hands of Dr. Khalaj. This can also be viewed from the high number of positive feedbacks of the patients who have already had a successful surgery with him.
